I was actually looking to see if any migratory warblers had yet shown up (not the case). Up in a nearby pine tree was a very large dark shadow, that on closer inspection was a GHO!. The owl tolerated my scrutiny for only a minute, and then took off for a distant tree. They fly along with their longer, lower bill (mandible) just touching the surface of the water. When a small fish is felt, the shorter, upper bill snaps shut. Much fun to watch as they zig-zag along the shoreline of the gulf. Their numbers seem to be increasing on the northern gulf---they are now plentiful, whereas, only a few years ago, they were seen here only occasionally in the summer. The largest tern, on the left side of the picture, is a Caspian Tern, our largest tern. Note its size compared the the surrounding Royal Terns. Also, the Caspian Tern has a "coral" colored bill, compared to the more "orange" bill of the Royals. This sandspit had 5 different species of terns: Forsters, Least, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. Fascinating place that documents the evolution of dwellings and culture of the Anasazi peoples--now more sensitively referred to as the "Ancestral Pueblos"-- who inhabited these arid mesas from 600 AD to about 1200 AD. What happened to them? Did they "vanish", or migrate south? Rugged scenery with deep canyons winding their way toward New Mexico and Arizona, seen off in the distance. The varied cliff dwellings suggest both the sacred and the mysterious.
